POSITION OPENING – LIBRARY DIRECTOR
The Law Library Association of St. Louis, one of the oldest law libraries west of the Mississippi, has an opening for Library Director available as of approximately mid-June of 2026. The Law Library Association helps self-represented individuals, judges, attorneys and the general public by providing access to legal information and educational programming, and it is firmly committed to increasing access to justice. The Library is located on the top two floors of the historic Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis.
Primary Duties include:
- Developing and managing the Law Library budget as well as handling other day-to-day financial matters
- Managing overall library resources, including print and digital resources and negotiating contracts with vendors
- Engaging in outreach with current and potential library partners and coordinating joint programs and projects (such as Legally Reading book discussion group)
- Managing the library’s monthly continuing legal education program, including identifying speakers and topics
- Handling marketing duties, including writing and sending periodic email newsletters and updates, working to maintain and increase memberships and engaging in social media outreach efforts
- Engaging in periodic fundraising efforts, including end-of-year fund drive
- Maintaining and potentially expanding library’s policies and practices to keep them up-to-date
- Supervising other library staff (currently 1 other full-time and 2 part-time employees)
- Handling reference and other patron inquiries as needed
Minimum Requirements:
Education
- Master of Library Science (M.L.S.), Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school; AND/OR
- Juris Doctor degree (J.D.) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school
Experience
- Minimum six months of experience working as a law librarian (1-2 years’ experience preferred)
- Minimum six months of supervisory experience (1-2 years’ experience preferred)
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Knowledge of WESTLAW and internet legal resources and/or other online databases and software applications. Interest in new and emerging technologies and resources in the legal industry
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other web-based information delivery services
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Communicates clearly, confidently, and persuasively.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Responsible and reliable, with strong organizational skills and an aptitude for performing functions requiring a high degree of accuracy and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and prioritize and complete multiple assignments.
