The Law Library Association proudly collaborates with the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL).  Here's what Susan McCourt Baltz, Executive Director of BAMSL had to say in our recent Q and A with her.

What inspires BAMSL to support and collaborate with LLA?

BAMSL is inspired to support and collaborate with LLA due to their shared commitment to community service, access to justice, and the promotion of legal education. The collaborative projects, like food drives and grants for initiatives such as the "Pro Se Guidebook," demonstrate a mutual goal of enhancing legal resources and support for the community.

Do you see more opportunities for partnerships or collaboration with the Law Library Association in the future?

Yes, I am certain there are many more opportunities for partnerships with the Law Library Association. Focusing on community projects, education initiatives, and resources to support access to justice, both organizations can expand their impact and reach.

What support/services/programming does BAMSL provide to its member attorneys and nonmember attorneys in the St. Louis community?

BAMSL provides a range of support and services to its member and non-member attorneys in the St. Louis community, including:

  1. CLE programs: Offering educational programs to help attorneys stay current on legal developments.
  2. Networking Opportunities: Facilitating events and forums for attorneys to connect and collaborate.
  3. Pro Bono Programs: Supporting initiatives that connect attorneys with clients in need of legal assistance.
  4. Resources and Publications: Providing access to legal research materials, newsletters, and practice guides.
  5. Mentorship Programs: Connecting experienced attorneys with those newer to the profession for guidance and support.

What are the benefits of BAMSL membership?

BAMSL membership offers several benefits, including:

  1. Access to a variety of CLE programs to fulfill requirements and enhance knowledge.
  2. Networking Opportunities: Events and gatherings that facilitate connections with other legal professionals.
  3. Professional Development: Resources, workshops, and mentorship programs to support career growth.
  4. Access to Legal Resources: Tools, publications, and research materials to aid in legal practice.
  5. Pro Bono Opportunities: Involvement in initiatives that serve the community and provide legal assistance to those in need.
  6. Discounts on Services: Reduced rates for events, publications, and other legal services.

What do you want our law library patrons who are non-attorneys representing themselves in court to know about BAMSL?

We want non-attorney patrons representing themselves in court to know that BAMSL is committed to supporting access to justice in our community. Our members often engage in pro bono work and community service, reflecting our dedication to ensuring that everyone has access to the legal support they need.

Besides supporting our efforts, how else does BAMSL support persons trying to represent themselves in our legal system?

The St. Louis Bar Foundation recently awarded the Law Library a grant to help create the self-representation guide.  We also host the Federal Court Legal Advice Clinic which provides 30-minute consultations with an experienced federal civil practitioner to answer questions about filing civil cases in federal court.  Additionally, we offer the Bankruptcy Pro Se Assistance Program that assists those considering bankruptcy and those who have filed for bankruptcy without an attorney.

What other organizations does BAMSL partner with?

BAMSL partners with various organizations to enhance its community impact, including:

  1. Legal Services of Eastern Missouri: Collaborating on pro bono initiatives and legal assistance programs.
  2. The Missouri Bar, other Metropolitan Bars and Affinity Bars: Working together on advocacy and legal education efforts.
  3. Local law schools: Partnering for events, internships, and educational opportunities.
  4. Community service organizations: Engaging in joint projects like food drives and legal clinics.
